11 Jul Godzilla vs Kong (Spoiler free)
The two titans have landed and what an impact they have made! Ever since the release of Godzilla back in 2014 and Kong: Skull Island respectively. Fans only wanted one thing and that was a showdown between cinemas two biggest hitters, and during a pandemic that altered many a schedule for many film titles. When Godzilla vs Kong dropped. It did not disappoint in my view and was worth the wait.
Right from the start you can feel the tension with Kong knowing there’s a change in the air with his human allies wanting to shield him, quite literally, from Godzilla knowing that a confrontation will be near apocalyptic if they should meet. But meet they do and the mayhem that ensues is beautifully crafted. Sure, the movie isn’t perfect but those issues are minor. What I witnessed was a movie that was well thought out and scored in terms of the plot, characters, and atmosphere. It stays faithful to both titans. Whoever you favour, you have respect and concern for the opponent rather than wish them a cruel fate. You even have concerns for the humans with a crazy plot to take Godzilla down and crown themselves as the saviours of the human race. Which never works out if they ever study geek-lore. Which they never seem to do, but that’s a subject for another time.
We get explore the Hollow Earth, a world that was only mentioned in previous titles that lead up to Godzilla vs Kong, and what is witnessed is spectacular. With a slight nod to Avatar. We saw creatures and landscapes that we can only hope to see if further Toho titles are greenlit. If it was OTT in some places within the movie, it wasn’t too extravagant. It was well balanced with cool references to the original showdown between Godzilla and Kong, and other titles that they have featured in.
Whether you are fan of either or not, I think this is a must watch. It’s not a simple remove your brain and sit back and enjoy. It does engage you at some level, but it’s just so enjoyable and so easy to watch over and over again. It’s just a shame that this global pandemic hasn’t allowed us to view Godzilla vs Kong and many other titles on the big screen, but don’t let that stop you. There are thrills aplenty, action, and humour.
So can I give it a rating? Yes. Four out of five stars. As stated, it is not perfect with a few questions that were left unanswered. But that can be forgiven. This is the monster movie we needed and it delivered in spectacular style.
